既に一幕の大意を掴んだ人は「一体、アナトリーは何で亡命を？」「フレディは単なるアホ？」「可哀そうなフローレンス」などと色々妄想したことだろう。本来ここでそれらの理由を書くべきだが、このサイトの趣旨が「大意」であり、心の感情ではないので、「なぜ？」は当日に青山劇場で、あるいは梅田芸術劇場で知り得てほしい。
さて、第二幕は始まった。あれから一年後。「アナトリー」はタイのバンコクでソビエト連邦の新たな挑戦者と王座防衛戦に臨んでいた。「フレディ」は相変わらずで、地元の人々と一緒になって、なんでアジアのバンコクで王座決定戦が行なわれるなんておかしなことだ、と毒舌を吐いている（バンコク／ワン・ナイト・イン・バンコク）。
『CHESS』の歴史を振り返る時、この第二幕のオープニング「ワン・ナイト・イン・バンコク」を主軸に話さないわけにはいかない。「バンコクで一夜を過ごせば、怖い男もおとなしくなる。絶望と歓喜の間には、そんなに遠くない。バンコクの位置や派タフな男も転ばせる」。何と言う素晴らしい歌詞だろう。しかも歌い手が凄い。「マリー・ヘッド」だ。彼のあの、毒舌、神経むき出しの姿勢は、凄かった。皆さんに当時の彼を見せたかった。マリー・ヘッドがあんなに素晴らしいパフォーマンスを演じてくれたので、その後の「フレディ」役は、かなり苦労したそうだ。日本ではどうだろうか？第二幕は、こうして、世界中でヒットした曲が勢揃いしている。では、「ワン・ナイト・イン・バンコク」聴いてみましょう。四半世紀前、日本で大ヒットしました。ABBAファンは、いつかまた近いうちにABBAが活動を再開するものと期待し、ABBAを知らない人でも、この曲の虜になった。なお、全米ではビルボード3位に入った。
