オープユング・セレモニーの後、アービターが試合のルールを長々と読みあげる段階になって、フレディは実に効果的にしかも慇懃（いんぎん）無礼な態度でもってその場を立ち退くということをやってのける。その時､最も屈辱を受けたのは、彼自身のセコンド、フローレンス・ヴァシーだった。彼女は周囲の冷笑や抗議するモロコフに対して、フレディの弁護の余地ない態度を何とかしなければならない立場に追いやられるが、このやりとりの間に彼女は敵方のロシア人・アナトリーと初めて出会うことになる。アナトリーは彼女の立場に深い同情を寄せる。アービターは相も変わらずルールに執着し続けている(カルテット・格調と平静の模範）
