＜第二幕・ワン・ナイト・イン・バンコク＞
あれから1年が過ぎた。今年の『ワールド・CHESS・チャンピョンシップ』大会がタイのバンコクで行われようとしていた。現在の世界チャンピョンは西側に亡命したアナトリー。彼の対戦者は挑戦者のロシア人の“CHESS・マシーン”ことレノイド・ビガード。アナトリーのタイトル防衛戦だ。昨年とは逆の立場だ。しかも今年はアメリカ代表として、ソ連のチャンピョンと戦わなければならない。このソ連の挑戦者はやはり、モロコフとその仲間達にコントロールされている。昨年までの世界チャンピョンのフレディは、今はCHESS・プレイヤーからは引退し、この競技会にはTVのコメンテーターとしてやってきた。フレディは、プレイヤーの重圧から解放されてリラックスしているようで、メラノとはまったく対照的なバンコクの怪しげな魅力には無関心だ。
☆「ワン・ナイト・イン・バンコク」を最初に歌ったのは『ジーザス・クライスト・スーパースター』のオリジナル・アルバムに出演したマレー・ヘッドだった。彼がふてぶてしく歌うこの曲は1984年、世界中でヒットし〝全米3位〟になった。エレイン・ペイジとバーバラ・ディクソンが歌った「アイ・ノウ・ヒム・ソウ・ウエル」も世界的に同じくヒットしたが、日本では「ワン・ナイト・イン・バンコク」の方が、レコード店では頻繁に流れていた。
☆ABBAのシングルカットの中で一番売れたのは言わずもがな「ダンシング・クイーン」ですが、その「ダンシング・クイーン」より売れたシングルがこの「ワン・ナイト・イン・バンコク」でした。
